Laser eye surgery is the common name for laser refractive surgery which aims to correct refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
Laser eye surgery, also known as laser vision correction laser vision correction, is the common term for laser refractive surgery which aims to correct refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Using advanced laser technologies, the surgeon reshapes the cornea to get rid of the refractive error so the patient can have a clear vision without glasses.
In ophthalmology various types of lasers are used to treat different eye conditions. Laser eye surgery in this page refers to excimer laser surgery of the cornea, which aims to correct refractive errors like myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism to get rid of glasses and/or contact lenses.
Since 1991, approximately 50 million people globally have undergone laser eye surgery for refractive errors. With current level of knowledge, experience and technological advancement in laser machines, the risk of blindness from laser surgery stands at 1 in 5 million procedures, making it safest surgical eye procedure performed.
However, to reach this level of safety, the procedure must be done only on suitable eyes following a detailed examination by an experienced eye surgeon. At Perfect Vision Turkey, we use latest diagnostic devices to check the suitability of your eyes for laser vision correction and use most advanced laser devices to make your vision perfect.
In order to see clearly, the image must be focused on retina. When there is a problem with the focusing power of the eye, the image focuses either in front (myopia) or behind (hypermetropia) of the retina. Additionally, some eyes have rotational asymmetry in the eye's refractive power, causing image fail to focus to the retina in all planes, this is called astigmatism.
In general terms, myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism is classified as refractive errors. Moreover, after the age of 45, eye loses its ability to focus near and this problem is called presbyopia.
All laser vison correction systems reshape the cornea to correct it’s focusing power errors, thus allowing the image to be focused directly on the retina without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Fundamentally, using advanced laser systems, the surgeon creates a permanent 'tattoo' of eyeglasses over the eye, improving vision.
LASEK, LASIK, no-touch and SMILE are the commonly used techniques for performing the reshaping process on the cornea's surface. At Perfect Vision Turkey we offer all these techniques depending on your eye’s suitability and your personal preferences.
Generally speaking, laser vision correction surgery is recommended for individuals above 18 years of age, if their refractive error remained stable for last two years. Myopia less than -8 diopters, hyperopia less than +5 diopters and astigmatism less than 5 diopters can be safely and effectively corrected with current laser systems.
In eyes with higher refractive errors, alternative vision correction techniques like ICLs are better options. After age of 45, individuals start to experience presbyopia and need reading glasses for near tasks, instead of laser vision correction surgery, refractive lens exchange surgery (RLE) becomes a better option. You can check our RLE pages for information about this procedure.
The day starts with a detailed eye exam lasting about one hour. Various state-of-the art diagnostic machines are used to evaluate all parts of your eye and your surgeon personally review your results and examines your eye. If your eye is suitable for laser eye surgery, you will have a discussion with your surgeon regarding the options.
Your surgeon will tell you pros and cons of each technique and you will have the chance to ask all your questions. If you decide to proceed with the laser vision correction, both eyes will be treated in same session which takes around 10 minutes using our high-tech FDA approved Excimer laser and Femtolaser systems.
Afterward, you'll leave the laser room ready to start on a glasses-free life. A follow up exam is scheduled to next day, after which and you can travel back home after the check-up.
