Laser eye surgery, or LASIK, is a common surgical procedure performed for people with refractive errors like myopia, astigmatism, or hypermetropia to eliminate their need for glasses. Essentially, it permanently reshapes your cornea using very high-precision laser devices, so you will not need eyeglasses for perfect vision. This procedure is mainly suitable for younger adults and is generally performed on individuals over the age of 21 when refractive error typically stabilizes. For people over the age of 50 who also need reading glasses, RLE surgery is the only alternative to eliminate both distance and reading glasses.

How is Laser Eye Surgery (LASIK) Performed?

Laser eye surgery, also known as LASIK, is performed using two different, very sophisticated lasers to achieve perfect vision without complications. The first laser, called the femtosecond laser, creates a cut on the cornea, which is then opened like a flap. The second laser, the excimer laser, performs the refractive correction, and the flap is closed over its original position.

There are other methods of laser eye surgery, such as no-touch or PRK surgery, which only use the excimer laser and perform the procedure on the outer layer of the cornea. However, this method can cause more complications and damage to the outer layer of the eye, an important part of the cornea. Although the name "no-touch" sounds appealing, it is an inferior method of correcting refractive errors compared to LASIK.

What to Expect on the Day of LASIK Eye Surgery

If the patient arrives at Perfect Vision Turkey Eye Clinics in the morning, all measurements will be completed in less than one hour, and the patient will be ready for laser eye surgery. The procedure is performed in an operating room where the femtosecond and excimer lasers are present.

It takes around 10 to 15 minutes for preparation and completion. Afterward, contact lenses are inserted into the patient's eyes to prevent itching and burning sensations for the first night. The next morning, the contact lenses are removed, and 99% of patients have very good vision on the first day.

What is the Best Age for Laser Eye Surgery (LASIK)?

Although LASIK can be performed after 18 years of age if myopia or astigmatism is still increasing, the procedure will only correct the values present on the day of surgery, so the patient may have some residual refractive error after a few years. It is better to wait until around the age of 21, which is when myopia typically stabilizes in most patients. However, if we can document that a patient's myopia has been stable for the last 2-3 years, LASIK can be done after age 18.

Some patients ask if laser eye surgery can correct presbyopia, which requires reading glasses after age 45. Unfortunately, LASIK cannot correct presbyopia.
